METHOD OF MANUFACTURING AN OPTICAL FIBER

In a method of manufacturing an optical fiber a bare fiber core portion is manufactured by heating and extending the core starting material. A fine granular oxide for a glass clad obtained by the method of vapor deposition is coated onto the bare fiber of core portion and then it is heated. Alternatively the glass clad layer may be formed by passing the bare fiber core through a crucible containing molten glass and out of a fine hole provided at the bottom of the crucible. The two methods may be combined to give a double clad.
