CONSTITUTION:In a liquid crystal display device particularly using a positive dielectric anisotropic nematic liquid crystal, visible light transmitting materials 27 such as TiO2, SiO, SiO2, Ce2O3, Al2O3 are interspersed in a liquid crystal layer 26 in such a way that n/nG is 0.60-0.88 or 1.15-1.50 where the refractive index of the liquid crystal is defined as (n) and the refractive index of the visible light transmitting materials as nG. For example, a liquid crystal 26 of biphenyl type having 1.52 refractive index is sealed between glass substrate 21, 25 having respectively transparent electrodes 22, 23, and SiO having refractive index 2.0 is interspersed as the materials 27 in the layer 26. Thereby, the bright image and high contrast are obtained.
