PURPOSE:To easily produce a two-stage catalytic converter having good durability by a method wherein a pair of end plates are disposed in a hollw cylindrical casing, then catalyst elements are fitted into the casing and are abutted against the end plates. CONSTITUTION:The pair of intermediate end plates 14, 15 are fitted into the hollow cylindrical casing 13 which is opened at both ends, and either one of the end plates 14, 15 is welded to the casing 13. Then, the catalyst elements 22, 23 fitted respectively with peripheral-surface cushion members 24, 25 respectively and end plates 28, 29 jointed to the elements 22, 23 through end-face cushion members 26, 27 respectively are simultaneously fitted into the casing 13 by applying axial loads to them and the elements 22, 23 are abutted against the intermediate end plates 14, 15 respectively. Thereafter, the end plates 28, 29 are welded to both ends of the casing 13. Accordingly, the two-stage catalytic converter which is easy to assemble and high in durability and reliability can be produced at low cost. |
