Secondary or tertiary fatty acids such as pivalic acid, isononanoic acid, tridecanoic acid were prepd. by treatment of unsaturated hydrocarbons such as isobutylene, diisobutylene, triisobutylene, or tertiary alcohols such as tertiary butanol, 2,4,4-trimethyl-2-pentanol at -10≦̸C-100≦̸C in the presence catalyst 80-90% sulfuric acid. Thus, 0.1 mol diisobutylene reacted with 0.3 mol sulfuric acid in 20-25≦̸C in 300 ml high-pressure reactor, added with 1.8L water and extracted with 50ml hexane to give isononanoic acid(92.0% yield).
