PURPOSE:In preparing the titled substance from benzene and propylene, to reduce the amount of ethylbenzene as a by-product, by bringing a fraction from a distillation process into contact with a Friedel-Crafts catalyst so that trimethylindane is converted into a high-boiling compound. CONSTITUTION:Benzene is introduced from the pipe 6 to the alkylating reaction tank 1 and propylene from the pipe 7 to the tank, both are reacted, and the reaction product is introduced from the pipe 26 to the transalkylating reaction tank 2. The reaction product is fed to the catalyst separator 3, the catalyst is circulated through the pipe 10, and the liquid phase part is sent through the water washing and neutralizing tank 4 to the distillation process 5. In this process a product is obtained, benzene is circulated through the pipe 15, and a high-boiling fraction is exhausted from the pipe 20. The remaining residue is introduced to the reaction tank 30 of treating process, trimethylindane is converted into a high-boiling compound by catalytic treatment with a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, and all the treated substances are circulated through the transalkylating reaction tank 2. EFFECT:A distillation column for removing ethylbenzene in a distillation process is not required. |
