PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as an intermediate of dyes and organic rubber chemicals, in high yield, by reacting a halogenated nitrobenzene compound with an aniline compound in the presence of a specific quaternary salt, an acid-neutralizing agent, and a copper catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The compound of formula III is prepared by reacting the compound of formula I (X is Cl, Br, etc. substituted at o- or p-position) with the compound of formula II (R is H, methyl, etc.), pref. under substantially anhydrous conditions, in the presence of (A) a quaternary salt selected from the group of benzyltrialkyl- ammonium salts, benzyltrialkylphosphonium salts, benzyltriphenylphosphonium salts, tetraalkylammonium salts, and tetraalkylphosphonium salts (e.g. benzyl- trimethylammonium bromide), (B) an acid-neutralizing agent (e.g. NaOH), and (C) a copper catalyst (e.g. copper powder, copper cyanate, etc.). |
