The device has an insertion slot (5) through which the card is inserted and removed by hand, which communicates with a container (1) movable to feed the card from the insertion and extraction position to the working position in which information can be read and/or recorded from or onto the card. This movement is effected by pivoting the container (1) about a point (3) against a return spring (12) acting on the end adjacent the insertion slot (5). The latter is blocked by a stationary baffle (7) when the container ( 1) is in the working position. A locking latch (2) cooperates with the inner end of the container (1) in both positions to hold it stationary. Pref. the latch (2) is coupled to a display element (9) for indicating the position of the container (1). The unit is designed for max. simplicity.
