The process of making sandals consists of making a sole (7), in one or two pieces, with cavities extending perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the sole. One or more straps (10,11) are then put through the cavities which form passages across the width of the sole. The straps form loops to hold the foot when fastened by buckles (21) on top of the foot. The straps can be removable so that they can be interchanged to improve the fit or to vary the style of the sandal.
