The spring is capable of providing a high spring force at small axial compression for use in a cutting tool clamp assembly or the like. It comprises a compact solid guide ring (1,2) at either end with an axially compressible spring region (3) between them. The rings (1,2) and the region (3) are formed as an integral bush and the region (3) is provided with a number of part-circumferential slots (4) which produce a number of separate bars (5) integrally interconnected via bush wall areas (6). The thickness of successive bars (5) may increase in axial direction, the greatest thickness preferably being at least 1.5 times that of the narrowest bar.
