Aromatic dibasic acid chlorides are made by reacting (a) a polyester with an aromatic dibasic acid as main component, with (b) Cl2 (c) in an inert liquid reaction medium at 70-400 degrees C, and separating the products e.g. by distillation under reduced pressure. The reaction may be promoted by conducting it under radiation of 2000-7000 Angstrom (esp. illumination of high pressure Hg lamp) or in the pres. of a free radical initiator such as an organic peroxide. The reaction medium is generally chosen from polychlorohydrocarbons and aromatic acid chlorides. The process is esp. useful for producing acid chlorides from scrap polyesters e.g. terephthaloyl chloride from polyethylene terephthalate.
|
