Flexible phenolic resins - for paints by condensing dimethylalkylphen and methylol cpds of polyfunctional phenols

Flexible phenolic resins are prepd. by condensing dimethylolalkylphenols having 1-20C alkyl groups, with methylol compds. of polyfunctional phenols, in which at least half of the reactive H atoms are replaced by methylol groups, to form co-condensates in which the separate methylol compds. are distributed statistically, 1.4-6 methylol groups being present in the polyfunctional phenols per 1 mole dimethylolalkylphenol. Used for preps. of paints esp. for metal panels or cars. Films obtained from the resins have a good flexibility without the use of plasticisers, and a high mechanical strength. The resins can be also used in mouldings, paper coating and textile impregnation.
