The self-cleaning filter has a filter housing (1) having a filter insert (2), one of whose surfaces is connected to the inlet (11) and the other to the outlet (12). The inlet side and the outlet side of the filter insert (2) are each connected to one side of a control membrane (3) which opens a flushing valve (5) when a predetermined pressure drop across the filter insert is reached. A piston (6) fitted between filter insert (2) and flushing valve (5) and provided with a through bore (43) designed as throttle is then driven against the force of a spring (48) and conveys a skimmer (7) linked to the piston (6) across that surface of the filter insert (2) which is connected to the outlet (12). <IMAGE>
