The fluid operating mechanism provides stationary and rotary companion parts of a fluid coupling. It has in its rotary part a cylinder with a piston defining opposite chuck closing and opning cylinder ends, and ports in both coupling parts. The ports together with two fixed conduits form fluid passages to the opposite cylinder ends. Each passage has an interposed check valve and an associated plunger. The check valve in either passage opens to admit fluid into, but is normally closed to block fluid flow from, the associated cylinder end. The plunger associated with either check valve opens the valve when subjected to fluid pressure in the other passage.
