This is in addn. to 2929693, which describes a lance used to collect a molten sample and contg. an optical waveguide employed to determine the cooling curve of the sample, which is collected in a refractory tube of small dia., with an open end. The novelty is that the refractory tube contains a heat resisting device (I) of good thermal conductivity to which the sample adheres. Device (I) consists of a disk or membrane, or a layer obtd. by vapour deposition; and prevents the sample from reaching a thermocouple located behind the device. The thermocouple is connected by compensating leads to a temp. measuring appts. The use of the lance described in the main patent is extended so the range of temps. which can be measured is increased.
