An apparatus for separating off solids from liquids, for example from waste water, includes an edge screen, which is arranged at an inclined angle to the horizontal and is furnished with chiefly horizontally orientated lamellae (11) having gaps (12) lying between. Above the edge screen is arranged a feed part (13) from which the liquid is passed to the edge screen. A liquid layer which contains the solids flows from the feed part downwards over the edge screen, the liquid gradually flowing off through the gaps and leaving the solids behind on the lamellae of the edge screen. According to the invention, the arrangement includes an expedient guiding and control of the liquid and solids on passing through a feed vessel (30) having stabilising bulk heads (60, 29) and a sediment separator, a screen deck having a purification material down conveyor-gap cleaner (14), a vessel (32) for receiving the liquid which has flowed through the gaps (12) of the edge screen, and a vessel (31) for receiving the solids separated off and any entrained liquid and transport of the same to a reception element (53) for the mass, which said solids including liquid form, the mass being preferably compressed prior to delivery to the reception element. <IMAGE>
