PURPOSE:A hypoglycemic that contains the water extract of dried stone-fruits of ''kihada'' (Phellodendron amurense Ruprecht) as the major active principle to act on the central nervous system to depress the blood sugar. CONSTITUTION:Dried stone-fruits of ''kihada'' are soaked in warm water and/or lower alcohol usually at 60 deg.C or lower temperature for 3hr 3 times and the extracts are filtered and condensed under reduced pressure. The resultant extract is used as a hypoglycemic. The aqueous extract is almost nontoxic to mammarians (acute LD50 in mice is more than 2,000mg/kg given intraperitoneally) and shows high hypoglycemic activity when administered orally and parenterally. The effect develops in about 30-60min after administration and is maintained for hours. Mechanically, it acts on central nervous system, especially on the HL and HVm in the high level center of glucose metabolism to show hypoglycemic activity. The dose is about 10-50mg/kg/day and appropriately varied. |
