PURPOSE:To selectively hydroesterifying vinyl group of a (1-arylethenyl) vinylbenzene, by reacting the (1-arylethenyl)vinylbenzene with carbon monoxide and water or an alcohol in the presence of a carbonylating catalyst of transition metal complex. CONSTITUTION:1.0mol. compound shown by formula I (R1 is aryl) is reacted with carbon monoxide and water or a lower alcohol, preferably methanol in the presence of 1.0001-0.5mol., preferably 0.001-0.1mol. based on 1.0mol. of the compound of a carbonylating catalyst of transition metal complex, e.g. complex catalyst of noble metal such as Pd, Rh or Ir, especially Pd complex catalyst at 40-150 deg.C, preferably 70-120 deg.C under 30-700kg/cm<2>, preferably 90-500kg/cm<2> CO pressure to give the aimed compound shown by formula II (R2 is H or lower alkyl) selectively. |
