The present invention provides the compounds of the formula: wherein R3 is a group of the sub-formula [c]: CR10R11R12 [c] wherein R10 is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl or O.CO.R13 or O.CO.OR13 group where R13 is a lower alkyl, phenyl, benzyl, fluorobenzyl, chlorobenzyl, bromobenzyl, lower alkoxybenzyl or nitro benzyl group; R11 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group; and R2 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group; and Y is a hydrogen atom or is a group Z wherein Z is a removable protecting group, with the proviso that R and Y are not simultaneously hydrogen. These compounds are useful intermediates in the preparation of bicyclic carbapenems.
