<p>MECHANICAL POWER TRANSMITTING SYSTEM In a mechanical system including a rotatable drive member and a load, a power transmitting device utilizing centrifugal force is employed for connecting the drive member to the load. In the device sequentially occurring centrifugal forces of opposite direction are generated by one or more weight means driven by the drive member and constrained to move about an associated endless path fixed to a carriage or carrier that reciprocates under the influence of the centrifugal forces. The reciprocating carriage is in turn drivingly connected to a load. which may either be a power absorbing device or a tool for working on some other material. The power transmitting device has the inherent ability to function as an automatic transmission or torque converter to cause an input force or torque to be applied to the load at relatively low speeds when the load is heavy and at relatively higher speeds when the load is light. The power transmitting device is shown in various and different embodiments with carriages that reciprocate either along straight line paths or along circular paths.</p> |
