<p>In a belt and pulley transmission system, particularly of expanding pulley type, the inner surface of the pulley grooves is covered with one or more layers of a material (33, 34) having a high coefficient of friction, and the pulley-contacting surfaces of the belt (29) are of metal. As shown, the belt (29) comprises an endless, reinforced elastomeric member having teeth on its radially inner surface, each tooth being provided with an attachment (38) providing the metal surfaces.
