1335461 Adjustable seat backs H R TURNER (WILLENHALL) Ltd 22 Dec 1971 [8 Jan 1971 15 April 1971 3 Nov 1971] 922/71 9468/71 and 51020/71 Heading A4J [Also in Division E2] A seat in which the seat rest 10 and backrest 12 are relatively adjustable about a fixed axis 14 comprises a screw threaded rod 30 connected between the seat rest and backrest and passing through a housing 40 having an inner surface 50 complementary to the thread of the rod and being pivotally connected through a stud 42 and nut 44 to the backrest. The seat and backrests are locked in position by the rod being spring biased into engagement with surface 50 by a torsion spring 72 and being relatively movable when the rod is moved out of engagement with surface 50 by rotation of a cam 60 passing through the housing and connected at one end 62 for pivotal movement about the axis of the bar. The backrest may be biased towards an upright position by a torsion bar (not shown). In a modification, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the seat rest is considered as being extended rearwardly beyond the pivotal axis 14 and the rod is connected between the rearmost extension of the seat rest and a continuation of the backrest beyond the pivotal axis. The cam is rigidly fixed to the rod such that when the rod is turned by a handle, the cam abuts against a shoulder in the housing and lifts the rod out of engagement with the complementary surface. |
