Apparatus for an inert-gas welding unit with automatic wire feed, in which the welding voltage can be set via a multiple-contact switch to which a digital display for the individual switching steps is allocated and to which a recognition circuit is connected which acts on the display belonging to the multiple-contact switch or on another optical and/or acoustic display. This display indicates whether the voltages set by the switching steps of the multiple-contact switch which pertain to a preselected diameter of welding wire exceed or fall short of the required voltage.
