NEW MATERIAL:An alpha-substituted phenyl-isovaleric acid derivative shown by the formula I (X is Cl, or tert-butyl; Y is H or CN; Z is halogen or CH3). EXAMPLE:[6-(4-Bromophenoxy)-2-pyridyl]methyl ester or alpha-isopropyl-p-chlorophenylacetic acid. USE:An insecticidal and acaricidal agent having improved insecticidal and acaricidal activity against various kinds of insects, especially against sanitary noxious insects and agricultural and gardening insects, having low toxicity to men and beasts, and fishes and shellfishes. PROCESS:(A) A carboxylic acid shown by the formula II or its reactive derivative is reacted with an alcohol shown by the formula III or its halide or its sulfoxylate, or (B) an acid halide shown by the formula IV (Hal is halogen) is reacted with an aldehyde shown by the formula V in the presence of a water-soluble cyanide, to give a compound shown by the formula I. In the case of (B), the compound shown by the formula I when Y is CN is obtained.
