The cleaner comprises a housing having a water reservoir at the bottom from which water is drawn to form upper and lower downwardly flowing water curtains, the lower one flowing into the reservoir. Air to be cleaned is passed sequentially through the lower curtain and then through the upper curtain. Cleaning grease and smoke-laden air from cooling stoves in commercial kitchens. The cleaning effect of the water curtains is maximized because the initial cleansing of inlet air is carried out by a water which has previously carried out the final cleansing of air.
