The invention relates to an expanding dowel having a fastening bolt (1), as used, for example, for the heavy-load fastening of objects on ceilings. Its cylindrical, metallic fastening bolt (1) has a polygonal support head (2) and two bolt parts (1a, 1b) with oppositely directed threads. These threads bear two spaced-apart cone elements (6a, 6b) which have a corresponding thread and the same cone angle. The cone elements (6a, 6b) are both enclosed and held by a cylindrical plastic cage (8), in the window cutouts of which there are arranged at least two metallic expanding elements (9) which are outwardly flush with said cage and lie, by means of adapted inner cone surfaces, on the two cone elements (6a, 6b). When the cone elements (6a, 6b) move axially towards each other as a result of turning the bolt (1), said cone elements run beneath the expanding elements (9) and the latter are forced radially outwards. <IMAGE>
