The mandrel for supporting a spool for coiling steel strip has four segments mounted in radial guides (39) in the flange (25). The flange (25) is secured to the inner shaft (5) by pins (39) fitting in radial holes (40). The inner shaft (5) is driven by the gear wheel (3) through splines (11). The segments (9) can be forced outwards to grip the bore of spool by the axial movement of the inner shaft (5) which is actuated by the hydraulic cylinder (13) and stationary piston (17). Releasing the clamping device (19) allows the inner shaft (5) to be withdrawn to change the mandrel (10) to suit different sizes of spools.
