PURPOSE:To prepare the titled both compounds simultaneously in high yield very efficiently, by using a catalyst supported on metallic palladium and/or cobalt in decomposing a phenolic derivative, e.g. 1,1-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethane, under heating. CONSTITUTION:A phenolic derivative expressed by the formula (n is an integer 0-5; X is H, CH3, C2H5, C3H7, OCH3, CH2Cl, CH2Br, Cl, Br, F, OH, COOH or NO2) is decomposed in the presence of a catalyst supported on metallic palladium and/or cobalt under heating to give vinylphenol and ethylphenol in high yield very efficiently. The ethylphenol is readily converted into vinylphenol and very industrially useful as a raw material for an antioxidant and a pharmacologically active substance. A commonly used carrier may be used as the carrier for the catalyst; however, active carbon is most preferred. |
