A process is made available for the preparation of cyclopentenones of the general formula I <IMAGE> in which R<1> denotes a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl or lower alkenyl radical and R<2> denotes a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, substituted or unsubstituted aryl, aryl-lower alkyl, thienyl or cycloalkyl radical. In this process, a furancarbinol of the general formula II <IMAGE> in which R<1> and R<2> have the abovementioned meaning, is subjected to rearrangement. The resulting hydroxycyclopentenone of the general formula III <IMAGE> in which R<1> and R<2> have the abovementioned meaning, is subjected to reductive dehydroxylation. The cyclopentenones of the general formula I can easily be prepared in this manner in high yields and at high purity.
