An arc furnace (2) for steel production includes electrodes (4) and an oxygen-fuel burner (6). During steel production, a hot smoke-containing gas mixture, which contains combustible gases, is produced. The combustible gas is burnt in a combustion chamber (14). The resulting gas mixture is then cooled in a conventional conditioning unit (20). A required cooling which goes beyond the cooling capacity available from the conditioning unit is achieved by spraying liquid nitrogen from a spray distributor (39) into the hot smoke-containing gas before entry of the gas into a filtration unit (24), in which smoke is separated off from the gas. |
