Mechanical coding of circuit component - ensures unique fit, preventing incorrect insertion into socket, using stepped plate and pins

The application is to an electronic circuit component which fits into a socket on a circuit card. A typical example is a memory unit for vehicle computer controls. The electronic component (2) and its associated socket (3) have, respectively, a keying slot (10) and projection (9). By making the shape of the slot and projection asymmetrical in an axial direction, and by ensuring that the socket (3) completely surrounds the element (1) incorrect insertion is prevented. The element can be held in the socket by contact springs (7) which bear against corresponding terminals (8) on the element. These springs are in turn connected to pins (1') on the base of the socket. By making the shape of the asymmetrical keying unique for each type of circuit element it is also impossible to insert a wrong element.
