A piston ring comprises a ferrous body having a bearing surface formed by plasma spraying of a Mo-Fe-Si powder of which at least 95% passes 170 mesh screen. Fe:Mo ratio is 9-3.2:1 and Fe+Mo constitute 90-99% and Si 0.4-6% of the powder. Fe used in combination with Si as inexpensive extender for Mo without loss of properties of high Mo concn. coatings.
