The cooling system has the gas or liquid cooling medium used to cool an electrical machine (2) in direct or indirect heat exchange with the evaporator (10) of a closed heat pump circuit having a compressor (14) driven directly or indirectly by the electrical machine (2). The cooling circuit for a driven or driving machine (7) mounted on the same shaft (1) is in direct or indirect heat exchanger with a second evaporator (11) in parallel with the first. The evaporators (10,11) are connected via the compressor (14) with a condenser (15) of the heat pump circuit (19) forming the primary of a heat exchanger with a secondary feeding a separate utilisation circuit. The system allows recovered heat to be used for room heating etc.
