Antimony oxy-halide prodn. from tri:halide and tri:oxide - by heating in organic solvent, useful as flame retardant for plastics

In the prodn. of Sb oxyhalides (I) of the formula Sb4O5X2 (in which X is halogen) by reacting SbX3 with Sb2O3, stoichiometric amts. of the reactants are kept at 80-280 (140-200) deg.C in an organic solvent (II) in which SbX3 is soluble, with constant thorough mixing, and the (I) formed is sepd. from the mixt. after reaction is complete. (II) is a high boiling (halo)hydrocarbon, ether, ketone, ester, amide or sulphoxide. (I) are used as synergistic flame retardants for plastics. They are obtd. in high purity and almost quantitative yield in a single stage. The process can also be carried out continuously.
