Electric arc appts. for surface elongated stock has an electrode spaced from the stock and a guiding element movable relative to and longitudinally of the stock axis. A power source for the arc is connected between the stock and the electrode. A sensor cooperates with a drive for longitudinal advancement of the stock and may comprise a limit switch, a photo-cell or a strain gauge. Useful for cleaning the surface of conductive stock such as wire, pipes and shafts of scale and lubricant. The sensor forms part of a safety circuit which prevents damage to the appts. during processing of the stock.
