A process for purification of gas in a tower by adsorption of CO2 (e.g. on molecular sieve 10A) in a central zone, and H2O (e.g. on alumina) in upper and lower zones. Regeneration is accomplished by heating e.g. electrically to desorb CO2, applying vacuum in direction opposed to that of adsorption flow; and then flushing in the same direction with purified gas (pref. derived from a second tower in adsorption stage) to cool adsorbents (pref. in conjunction with water cooling coil) and desorb H2O, this H2O being subsequently condensed. Gas is passed in opposite direction during consecutive adsorption stages, so that the dessication zones are utilised alternatively, and need not be completely cooled before adsorption commences. The method is esp to purify respired air for recycling e.g. in submarines, space vessels.
|
