The machine forms graduated markings in wooden workpieces, particularly rulers, having a workpiece support reciprocating at right angles to the direction in which they are delivered, a clamping mechanism, and a milling cutter with teeth in layers round the periphery. Each layer has at least one milling tooth lopping off the protruding ends of the workpieces, and at least two cutting the markings, the latter teeth typically alongside each other. The cutter can be raised or lowered for half the pitch of the markings or for a multiple of it, and the support can be a rotary table.
