The breech mechanism is for a firearm using cartridge-less ammunition, being out of line with the barrel axis in the loading position. In the loading position, the breech (3) is closed at the barrel end by a stop (4) fixed to the firearm and sealing off the passage (5') in it. An aperture (6) for a nozzle (7) can be provided in the stop. As the round is fed into the breech, a cushion of air is formed acting as a brake and protecting it from shocks.
