A fuel injection control system for an internal combustion engine (E) comprises a sensor unit (24...), monitoring at least one engine operating parameter, at least one fuel injection valve (10), a pressure governor (17) holding the fuel pressure on the injection valve to one value from a group of values and a control unit (13), which with its output signal (T) controls the injection valve and the pressure governor so that, on the one hand, the fuel pressure (P1) can be adjusted according to the engine operating conditions but the amount of fuel injected is kept constant. <IMAGE>
