A description is given of a device for electrothermally atomising an analytical sample for atomic spectroscopy. Despite low requirements being imposed on the manufacturing tolerances of the components, it makes reproducible measurements possible. It is necessary to construct an atomising body and contact electrodes in such a way that a substantially constant electrical and thermal resistance exists between the atomising body and the contact electrodes. For this purpose contact surfaces are present as spherical zones between the cylindrical atomising body and the electrodes to be received coaxially therewith at its ends. The centres of curvature of the spherical zones lie on the axis of the atomising body between its central plane and the sectional plane of the spherical zones and the outer cylindrical surface of the atomising body. The radius of curvature of the spherical zones is greater than the external diameter of the atomising body and less than half its length.
