A multi-layer liquid-crystal display contains a plurality of liquid-crystal layers (2a, 2b) which are arranged one above another and in which the longitudinal axes of the liquid-crystal molecules extend in the shape of spirals and parallel to the liquid-crystal layers. At least one section of the liquid-crystal layers is supplied with a voltage from a voltage source in order to convert the molecular alignment. Again, a pair (7a, 7b) of polarizers is provided whose polarization direction or in the case of which a vertical to the polarization direction is subjected to a deviation by an angle of between 3 DEG and 15 DEG , in order to reduce the spiral angle of the liquid-crystal material layers and to bring the deflecting angle essentially into alignment with the longitudinal direction of the liquid-crystal molecules. <IMAGE>
