PURPOSE:To obtain the titled fibers having a high whiteness at a low cost, by forming composite fibers in which a polymer having a higher iodine adsorption rate is present on the surface of the fibers, adsorbing iodine on the fibers, and treating the fibers with an aqueous solution of a cuprous compound. CONSTITUTION:Composite fibers consisting of two polymers, e.g. a copolyester and polyethylene terephthalate, having substanially different iodine adsorption rates are formed so that a polymer, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, having a higher iodine adsorption rate may constitute at least part of the fibrous surfaces. Iodine is then adsorbed on the formed composite fibers to give fibers in which the iodine is adsorbed. The fibers are then treated with an aqueous solution of a cuprous compound, e.g. cuprous chloride, to afford the aimed fibers containing cuprous iodide therein. Preferably, the polymer having a higher iodine adsorption rate occupies 5- 50% cross-sectional area of the fibers. |
