The carrier plate is designed to allow the printing of alpha numeric characters than can be machine read using an optical scanning technique. The unit is designed to provide an improved reliability of reading. The carrier has a base plate (1) of a transparent material onto which are formed multi segment elements over which the characters are reproduced. Each element has a number of segments (2) with separating strips (3). The elements may be printed on by a felt tipped pen and the colour of the ink reacts with the surface to provide adequate contrast for optical scanning. The elements are produced as a thin film so as to produce a smooth printing surface.
