A dog clutch, eg in a motorcycle gearbox, includes a shift sleeve (26) fast with countershaft (6) and engageable with gears (21, 22) having recesses (27, 28) each capable of receiving a pair of projections (24, 25) on the sleeve, one projection (24) of each pair being longer than the other (25), to provide for smooth initial engagement with a recess, the other projection (25) subsequently entraining the recess to minimise backlash.
