<p>1317943 Coating EI DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 1 July 1970 [1 July 1969] 31989/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] The surfaces of ethylene/propylene/diene copolymer elastomers are tackified by coating with compositions comprising (1) an elastomeric ethylene/propylene/diene copolymer, (2) a polar organic cyclic resin having a molecular weight of at least 200, (3) an oil-soluble organic salt of a transition metal and (4) a solvent drying the coating and exposing to an activating agent; or alternatively coating the elastomers with such compositions which have been preactivated by aeration. The elastomers may be derived from open chain or cyclic dienes with 6 to 22 carbon atoms, and the organic cyclic resin may be an isoprenoid, terpenoid or heat-insensitive phenol/aldehyde resin. Activation may be effected by forced air flow, ozone, ultra violet light in the presence of oxygen, spark discharge or flame treatment. Specified transition metal salts are naphthenates, linoleates, resinates and octoates of manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel and copper. The products are useful in the manufacture of tires and hoses. In examples compounded ethylene/propylene/1, 4-hexadiene elastomer stocks backed with 2 ply nylon carcass fabric which had been coated with a resorcinol/ formaldehyde resin-chlorosulphonated polyethylene adhesive are coated with cements comprising ethylene/propylene/1, 4-hexadiene copolymers, cyclic petroleum resins, carbon black, petroleum oil, hexane and (3-8) manganese naphthenate, (9-11) cobalt naphthenate and (12 and 13) manganese linoleate, followed by drying and activation with air and optionally ultra violet light; and with an aerated cement comprising ethylene/propylene/1, 4-hexadiene copolymer, cyclic petroleum resin, manganese naphthenate and conventional compounding ingredients.</p> |
