Flame cutting torch - with capacitive sensor which keeps torch at constant distance from workpiece, and where screen protects sensor from damage or flame spray

The sensor is fixed to the torch so the latter can be kept at a constant distance from a workpiece. The sensor is protected from damage due to flame spray by a screen fixed to the torch and located between the screen and the workpiece. The screen does not interfere with the operation of the torch or sensor, and also presses the workpiece against its anvil, so the piece cannot curl upwards towards the torch. The screen pref. has a shape of a crockery plate with a central hole; and the zone of the plate below the sensor is pref. made of a refractory, insulating ceramic, which may consist of a separate ceramic ring. Esp. for cutting thin metal sheet, e.g. with a plasma torch, where the screen prevents the sensor from hitting obstacles in the path of the moving torch, or from being damaged by flame spray.
