1432720 Alkylating isoparaffins MOBIL OIL CORP 25 Oct 1974 [25 Oct 1973 29 Nov 1973 (2) 5 April 1974] 46233/74 Heading C5E A C 4 -C 8 isoparaffin is alkylated with a C 2 - C 12 olefin in the liquid phase at - 20‹ to 150‹ C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising a macroreticular cation exchange resin containing acid groups and BF 3 , the resin having a water content between 0À5 and 20 wt. per cent and a surface acid concentration of less than 0À5 milliequivalents of H<SP>+</SP> per square metre of surface area. The reaction may be performed in the presence of 10-400 p.p.m. water and the amount of BF 3 present may either be in excess of that needed to saturate the resin or be between 0À1 eq. per equivalent of resin acid groups and the saturation amount in which case the resin also contains 0À1-10 equivalents of HF per equivalent of resin acid groups. The resin is preferably a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer containing sulphonic acid groups. The used-resin may be regenerated with a polar solvent, e.g. water or alcohol. The resin may have a surface area of 30-800 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. The molar ratio of isoparaffin to olefin is between 2 and 50 : 1. Examples relate to the alkylation of isobutane with butenes. |
