Automatic selection of overdrive associated with manual gearbox - using sensor for simultaneous adjustment of engine torque to give smooth changes

Although the particular gear is selected manually by the driver the connection and disconnection of the overdrive is automatic. A sensor evaluates, e.g. accelerator setting and vehicle speed to determine the point at which the overdrive is required or no longer beneficial. The regulator then orders the change. Using the automatic gear box techniques the engine torque is reduced during the change process to give a smooth transition. The necessary torque variation may be obtained by altering fuel flow, ignition angle, or suppression of firing in a cylinder.
