A detecting system is provided for the purpose of establishing the presence of a selected size and alignment of copying sheets which are to be used in a copier. Such a system is particularly advantageous when it is used in a copier by means of which copies having different enlargement ratios are to be produced from an original. The system has a size display and an alignment display, so that when inserted copying paper does not satisfy the condition required for a specific copying operation there is a clear display as to whether the size and/or the alignment of the loaded copying paper is inappropriate or unsuitable. The operation of such a copier is consequenty greatly improved and much more pleasant.
