An electronic switching device having external connections (51, 52; 53) for connection to an external voltage source (60) and a load (61), with a verification circuit (1) for generating a verification signal, a polarity changing circuit (2) containing an opto-electronic coupler (3P, 3S) and a power switching circuit (4) for directly switching the load connected to the external connections, in which arrangement the polarity changing circuit, on excitation or de-excitation of the opto-electronic coupler, inverts the verification signal to be applied thereafter to the power switching circuit.
