The appts. for lifting a load, such as a mail bao (9) from a wagon and suspending it above a hopper (11) adjacent to the wagon, moves the bag along a sloping path (5). A cable (6) attached to a hook which engages a ring (8) on the corner of the bag is pulled by an overhead mechanism. The mechanism has a horizontal frame supporting horizontally pneumatic or hydraulic piston and cylinder (12) with a cable pulley (2) mounted on the end of its piston rod (3). The cable is also attached to the piston rod and travels over a fixed pulley (1) at the remote end of the frame, back again over the moving pulley (2) and down to the bag. When the piston moves inwards, the bag is moved along the sloping path, since the hoist path has a vertical and a horizontal motion component.
